On Tuesday evening we had the vacuous, narcissistic Robert Jenrick, setting out his stall on Newsnight. Would you as they said in the American presidential election - about Richard Nixon, in 1960 'buy a used car from this man'? I definitely wouldn't. Don't forget it was president Richard Nixon, who was thrown out of office due to the Watergate scandal of 1972. He eventually resigned from office in August 1974, in disgrace. He famously said "there will be no whitewash - at the White House". Watergate became synonymous with graft, wrong doing, duplicity, sculduggery and criminality. So if you want to publicise something wrong - just add Watergate - and we all know what you mean - it's a shorthand.
Meanwhile, back in Blighty we have a limited choice today - its between Robert Jenrick and Kemi Badenoch. She is the maverick gunslinger - who lacks the necessary gravitas of a leader. She isn't a serious politician. Are we doomed to suffer the indignity - of having one of them to lead the Conservative Party? There is something of - Humpty Dumpty - about these two uninspiring politicians. As the great Irish playwright Sean O'Casey, said in Juno and the Paycock 'they can see no higher than a haystack'. I rest my case.
