Understanding our past.
As we all know understanding our past - both personally and nationally from a psychoanalytic or sociological point of view is necessary for happiness. So Rory Stewart MP - was very helpful in this regard in an illuminating two part programme in the true Reithian tradition in Border Country: The Story of Britain's Lost Middleland. Stewart is an excellent person to present this programme for two reasons: he was responsible for large parts of Afghanistan in 2002. Secondly there is a connection in the 'mind set' of these isolated insular communities - the middlelands. The back drop for this debate is of course the Scottish referendum on the 18th September later this year - regarding their independence. Jim Callaghan said many years ago during a previous General Election as prime minister - he was going around the country - "stirring up apathy" - this feels just like that. Watch this enthralling and educational programme - it will help you feel more engaged and less apathetic. It does what is says 'on the tin'.
