This issue of police corruption just won't go away. Regrettably Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary Mr Tom Winsor reported on Monday, that there are a number of cases that had stood out over the years in that public imagination. They are respectively 1. The Hillisborough cover up. 2. The Stephen Lawrence cover up. 3. The Andrew Mitchell 'plebgate'- cover up. They collectively have he claims a "corrosive" effect on the public's ability to 'trust' - the police. More than any other country in the western world the police in this country do their difficult job by - consent. I will focus my comments about the Metropolitan Police force in London that I know about - I was a copper in Soho in the early 1960's. The ham fisted response to the Plebgate scandal by the new commissioner - Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe didn't give a good initial impression. The politicians and in particular the former strongly supporters of law and order - Conservative government - have by now lost all confidence in their ability to clean out their 'stables'. I share their disappointment! In my opinion unless there is a recognition by the leadership in the Met of - just how bad things really are they will never improve. Leadership is woefully lacking at the very top of a highly dysfunctional organisation. To use the words of a previous home secretary its "not fit for purpose". Moreover there not the necessary calibre or mettle in the very top posts. In addition there's a lack of transparency its to opaque.
Unless their are more women at the very top nothing will change.
Why do I say this? Women don't have the same craven need to be liked by there colleagues - they are more freethinking out side the box - to use terrible management speak. Moreover they are not contaminated by the pernicious Masonic culture - of hidden and secret binary relationships.
