I there an exit stratergy?
The decision by President Obama to arm the rebels in Syria will only add fuel to the fire. There is no exit strategy, or if there is it has not been spelt out clearly apart from getting rid of President Assad. Despite the fact that terrible things have been done on both sides, seeing the end of Assad is not a sufficient reason from invading a country. Moreover its against the UN Charter and therefore illegal. Will Cameron be the US poodle? There is now widespread conflict across the Middle East, and it could spill over into other nations in the region like Lebanon and Turkey. Syria is both a proxy war for the US and Russians and also a civil war. This area in a 'tinder box'. Iran is there on the side lines, everyone now appears to have a - dog in this fight! In my opinion what is actually happening is the long battle over Islam and who will come out on top? Will it be the Sunni or Shia branch of Islam? In the longer term its about modernity and how these countries and faiths will cope with the future, and in particular with the increased emancipation of women across the world. All paternalist structures over time, including the church in Rome are under threat.
