A tedious film.

The Sunday Times, cinema critic Tom Shone - was scathing about this lacrimose film Hamnet. He awarded it two stars, I think that was over generous and my score is 1. It’s mawkish and tedious in the extreme and I decided after an hour and half - that life was too short to tolerate this pastiche of nonsense. How is possible to make William Shakespeare - the greatest writer ever - be so limited? Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare - is a pigmy, playing a giant. His attempts at parenthood to his son - Hamnet are stumbling and awkward. The endless tears at least had some purpose after the tragic death of Hamnet. Jessie Buckley as Shakespeare’s wife, makes a decent attempt at motherhood, but is too emotional and over wrought, though out the film. There is no light or shade - it’s all howling at the heaves. I’ve seen many films over the years, but few as disappointing as this one. I’ve seen it so - you don’t have to.
