It’s the pure simplicity of the Remembrance Day celebration on Whitehall - that marks such a contrast to the general - synthetic confection of so much of our social media and lives today. I’ve either been a participant when a policeman in the 1960’s or in the Merchant Navy or have watched it on television, for many years. The Cenotaph - at the very focal point of our attention is - deceptively simple. Made of Portland stone, with no embellishments other than the simple inscription - The Glorious Dead. Designed by Edwin Lutyens and has been our national shrine since 11 November 1920 by George V. I thought the King - not surprisingly looked drawn and sad - as it’s been a particularly difficult year with a cancer scare, the failure of his relationship with with his son Harry and more recently compounded by his ruinous and miscreant brother.
