On BBC iPlayer there is a three part series about the history and consequences of Empire. Introduced by the historian David Olusoga, makes for a fascinating and educational documentary. Empire is an extremely powerful and complex story over many generations and starting back in the first Elizabethan age of 1598. The later development of the East Indian Company in London with traders across the world, bringing back spices, nutmeg and black pepper to a new middle class in England. On the back of the - slave trade Britain became a wealthy nation that exploited its monopoly and defended by the Royal Navy. The history of Empire is in many ways one of - brute force and terror - which we should be ashamed of. This complex history has made our role in it very disturbing. Watch this series and be educated.
