The BBC has just revealed its latest list of the top - 100 Women International leaders from across the globe. The list is comprehensive and impressive and includes suck people as the renown artist Tracy Emin, Sharon Stone, actor, Hamida Aman, political activist Afghanistan and many more. Consult the BBC Website for more in depth information. I’ve been a signed up member of equality between men and women for as long as I can remember. When at the LSE, I would attend the weekly Women’s Consciousness Raising Group, until one day they suggested I - form my own Mens Consciousness Raising Group. In June of 1972 - I attended the launch of the political feminist magazine Spare Rib. A very close female student friend from the LSE - had a twin sister who was the designer of the magazine - so I was invited along with my student friend. It was quite a party. There at the party were a number of the leading feminists in the country at the time: Rosie Boycott, Marsha Rowe and Rosie Parker, (Rothschild) the person who financed the Spare Rib project.
I founded the first Men’s Consciousness Raising Group in September 1974 in Hampstead. At the time it was the very first such group in the world. Its members were from: academia, the law, book publishing, social work, psychiatry, photography and medicine,
It ran for about 10 years, meeting monthly in different homes of the members. There was a steady membership of about 9 people and over time became firm and trusted friends. One away - weekend we went up to Norfolk near Sandringham and close to the coast. We hired a delightful coastal cottage and on the Saturday after a sterling full English breakfast went for a coastal walk. We were heading for a particular pub near Burnham Market. The destination was the outstanding - Hero at Burnham Overy, a well established eatery. We had lunch and made our way back to the cottage. Sunday again the full English and group discussion about the weekend experience and the long drive home. I had hired a mini bus and was the driver back to London. An amazing experience for all of us - which had a lasting effect on all of us and created a bond of trust in each group member.
