If you want to see an exceptional film then Conclave is for you. It starts with the death of the Pope. It’s all very solemn and respectful and prayers are said. And then the Pop’s ring of authority is pulled off his dead finger. Immediately the ring has a top part cut off in an almost - brutal manner. The scene it now set for the protracted process of electing the next Pope. Set in the vast Vatican City, we are surrounded by great works of art, frescoes and tapestries. Over the next few days Cardinals from across the Catholic church start to arrive. Men - and it’s only men - start horse trading for votes. Who would be best to take on this onerous role? Should he - this time be an Italian - who can retain the place that many previous Italian Pops have done? Should he come from Africa or other third world country? What about the Dean of the Conclave, played to perfection by Ralph Finnes? The group dynamics are fascinating and bloody. I highly recommend this film.
