On Monday 21 October 2024, the world famous Neal’s Yard cheese company had a staggering £300,000 of their internationally recognised Hafod Welsh cheddar cheese stolen. The gang of criminals presented as buyers from an international company. They went to the warehouse in Southwark at Borough Market and disappeared with 22 tonnes of prime cheddar. The thieves are believed to have done this - to order and the produce is now very likely abroad. Mr Holden, the owner of the company thinks it’s probably in “Russia or the Middle East where no difficult questions will be asked”. Nevertheless the small world of artisan cheese makers have rallied round in support. Artisan cheese is now big business and Britain produces more than any other country, including France.
