Things can only get worse.

Sir Keir Starmer, set out a doom forecast for the British economy over the next 10 years. He is framing the long term relationship between the British state and the people. The new social contract is going to be tough for a number of years. The finances are in a bad condition and worse than the Office of Budget Responsibility  (OBR) indicated. Can he carry the day or is it more of the - same old politics? Does he have the necessary confidence of the citizens? He is on probation that will soon end - the honeymoon is now over. We await the Budget in the Autumn to set out the long term remedies. It's essential that a new vision is outlined with authority and - the role of the state over the next generation is described. It doesn't need to be Panglossian, but optimism is necessary.
