There are many internal contradictions in the EU at present. To cite a few of the most salient and obvious: the fallout from the financial crisis of 2008/9; the mass migration of 2015 and in particular over a million into Germany; the referendum of 2016 in the UK and Brexit; various terrorist attacks across the continent, including Paris, London and other places; Covid lockdown and other restrictions in the EU; the war in Ukraine and now the War in Israel and Gaza. These tensions are felt in specific countries, especially in the southern boarder to the EU - where most of the immigrants come to - like Greece, Italy, Spain and the UK, although we are not now part of the EU. According to the latest data, there are more than a million illegal immigrants living in the EU and they are not being deported. These tensions will only increase as the continent faces c!image change, mass Kmigration, stagnant economies, an ever increasing older population, health service demands, internal inequalities in all EU states, housing issues and nation debts. As the British prime minister Harold Macmillan, wisely said about politics and what can come from the unexpected - "events dear boy, events". Just So will - we in future enjoy a new Enlightenment, or sink into a the new dark age?
