The late great spy writer David Cornwall, better known under his pen name of John le Carre - has a film about his extraordinary life out this week with the interesting title of The Pigeon Tunnel. It's about his early life and work for the Secret Service, better known as MI5. As we now know he had a very rich and colourful life with an habitual lying father Ronnie Cornwall, a mother who abandoned the family when David was young. After Oxford he was for a time a teacher at Eton College and after this went to work in Vienna. At some point he found himself apply to become a spy with MI5. He was erudite and good linguistic and had apparently great charisma and charm - as if he was from the upper middle classes. I hope the film is as interesting as his real life - on Friday I will find out whether it is or not.
