The acclaimed European British polymath, academic George Steiner, who died in 2020 aged 90 - wrote extensively about The Holocaust catastrophie and it's impact on the ability to have a neutral and rational discussion about the murder of 6 million Jews in WW2. The language has therefore been hijacked, by this historical occurrence at the centre of European civilization Germany. When I was a student at the LSE we had a series of lectures by Steiner and they were erudite, inspirational and educational. His book published in 1958 - Language and Silence, seeks to address this conundrum of language and truth. We are still living today with this terrible ambiguity - as the last week shows with the invasion by Hamas into Gaza.
