I was on the same train to Birmingham in January 2020 as the prime minister, Boris Johnson, when a few hours later he declared his intention to develop the HS 2 line. Almost from the word go, it's been drowning in controversy. Over the last few days Rishi Sunak, has indicated his plans to cut the line north of Birmingham. George Osborne, the one time chancellor in The Times - has declared this to be an absurd nonsense and myopic of the government. The reason for the possibility of cancellation is the ever increasing cost of the project. On the other hand, politicians in the north of England are dismayed and angry that the line could stop at Birmingham and not go further north to Manchester or Liverpool. What an Eton mess.
