According to the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) the workforce in Britain has declined, due to Covid, lockdown and ongoing poor health. As a result the OBR estimates that annual spending on incapacity and disability benefits has jumped by £6.8 billion per year, while tax receipts have fallen by £8.9 billion. These twin hits to the national economy is a staggering £15.7 billion. Moreover the number of people inactive due to poor health is up by 440,000 and many cannot get the necessary health checks due to the exceptionally long waiting list. This is now compounded by the current strikes by junior doctors and next week consultants. This vicious circle is leading to a downward spiral. Where will it all end up?
