Today in 1948 the NHS was founded - coming out of the devastation of WW2 and the inspiration of the Attlee Labour government. As someone who has worked in the health service in adult and child psychiatry for many years, I'm proud of this amazing organization. Nevertheless as we all know - there are many serious problems with the way it functions. Whether that's the very long waiting lists, getting to see your GP, the building infrastructure, technology, the number of doctors and nurses - to name but a few of the issues. Having said this, as has be mentioned before - the NHS is the nearest thing we have in Britain to a religion. Today in Westminster Abbey, there will be a service of thanksgiving for the birth 75 years ago of the NHS.
