Immigration to the UK.
One of the most controversial and contentious issues underpinning the referendum last year was that of immigration. To the year ending in December 2016 there were 248,000 people immigrating to Britain, down some 84,000 on the previous year. Theresa May has claimed that she bring down the figure to the tens of thousands. This seems to be an improbable and ambitious number. David Cameron (remember him) when prime minister made a similar claim and thus brought his reputation into disrepute. The students who come to study are also included in these statistics, which on face value appears to be myopic, as many will leave after their studies. In his recently published popular book The Strange Death of Europe Douglas Murray argues that we in Britain have not been consulted on the issue of mass immigration. His contention is that the very nature and character of this country is fundamentally being changed without full and frank discussion. In his opinion this is to do with 'political correctness' and a fear by the establishment that they have 'cocked up'. Nevertheless unless we are able to have that discussion right wing political parties will make trouble and political capital over it.
