Elections in Holland.
The right wing bandwagon appears to have stalled in Holland yesterday with the nation wide elections. The prime minister Mark Rutte has done better than expected. The Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders is disappointed by its showing. There will be much relief across Europe - the right may have reached its high water mark. The green vote was increased in Holland. Next stop France in a few weeks time and then Germany in the autumn. In the wake of Brexit and Trump it was believed that populism was pushing itself into the main stream in the EU. However this may be seen as over optimistic on their behalf. A relief for all of us who want a 'popular liberalism' both here and elsewhere.
