A smile will earn you more money on average.

In the latest issue of The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology researchers from the University of Cologne considered many thousands of people across the globe and discovered not surprisingly that happy people who smile earn more on average compared with unhappy cynical people. This has a big impact on earnings over time and amount to as much as £170 per month over £2,000 per year. Assuming that the person may work on average for 50 years (a big assumption) that would caeteris paribus amount to £1000,000. The researches measured increases in relative income rather than absolute income over time. The degree of optimism compared to cynicism was discovered by answering the following question - most people use somewhat unfair means to gain profit or an advantage rather than lose it? They discovered a strong correlation, but as we all know correlation doesn't equal causation. However the findings are interesting for the choosing of staff by personnel managers in all organisations whether large or small. Companies that deal with the public and want a successful business should consider this research when employing staff for particular role within their company.

  1. Indeed, correlation doesn't equal causation - but it's an interesting concept!
