The niqab - yes or no?
This is increasingly becoming an issue of controversy in our multicultural society. A judge ruled yesterday that a women should not be able to hide behind this mask. In the interest of justice this is clearly the right decision, but it has wider implications for society that we all must consider. While accepting the basic assumption - on the one hand the right to dress how one pleases, and on the other our role in this society. Its where these two potentially clash is where the discussion starts. In my opinion however its more to do with the repression of women, and principally about their sexuality. Women are always being blamed for the Fall of Adam - Eve is still in court on the change of seduction. All religions are partly to this pernicious ongoing mythology. I cannot for the life of me understand this predilection for a wish to repress women. It betokens their underlying hatred and misogynistic attitude towards women. All patriarchal societies do and we should not be party to allowing its unnecessary encroachment here in Britain. Time to make a stand for women - their freedom is also our freedom.
