Divorce - yes or no?

A year from now the Scottish referendum takes place on in or out of the Union with the rest of Britain. If I were Scottish I would vote for independence. Its impossible to anticipate the post-divorce settlement, but on balance caeteris paribus I think its best for Scotland and England - its time to grow up and leave home. I therefore watched with interest the thoughtful discussion on Newsnight about the issue. I was surprised with the vote Yes = 30 or 62%. No = 18 or 38%. If this betokens the population as a whole in Scotland then we are in a different place a year from now. What I found fascinating was the backward nature of the No campaign - it was conservative. While on the other hand the Yes vote was optimistic and forward looking. The pound in your pocket argument was less important, than the emotional reason for voting for independence. It was head v heart. If this does come about England will be very different. What about a reunited Ireland next? What about our place as a permanent member of the Security Council at the UN? What about our place in the EU? What about Trident? The monarch? Will Labour ever get back into power as most of England vote Conservative? We will be in a post-imperial world. England we will be back to pre - 1707 when we got married. We live in interesting times.
