Why all the fuss?
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) yesterday found against the British government over the contentious issue of - life imprisonment without parole. The justice secretary and home secretary are not happy bunnies about this decision. The Criminal Justice Act 2003 introduced by the then home secretary David Blunkett is also not happy. Why all the fuss? Ever since we got rid of the death penalty in this country there has been a core group of - flog them and hang them brigade - that wanted death by some other means. The second best option - life without parole gave them that in some other form. In my opinion the court were correct - its against someone's human rights to lock them up and throw away the key - no matter how heinous their crime. I have never agreed with capital punishment, but at least in had one virtue, it was short and swift. However life without parole, is a slow death and is inhumane. I appreciate that for those who have suffered the terrible loss of a loved one this will be a bitter blow, but the rule of the mob is not a sufficient reason for changing the law.
