Liberace 1919-1987.
Way back in the 1950s when we all watched Liberace on a Sunday afternoon (there was little else to do) we never thought that he was - gay just rather over the top and extravagant. His endless talk about his brother George and his mother had an endearing quality. This new film about his life staring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon Behind the Candelabra is similarly outrageous and camp. The producers were worried that the film would only appeal to the gay community in America, but here in the UK we are more broadminded and less uptight, that our brothers across the pond. The audience in my local cinema was fairly full of ordinary people having a good time out on a cold Sunday afternoon in June, with nothing else to do. Little has change from that point of view over 60 years. Worth watching on a cold day, it will warm the heart.
