A black and bloody stain on our colonial history.

The Mau Mau uprising in Kenya in the 1950's resulted in a terrible over reaction from the British military authorities. There were many crimes of torture committed against these black people, including murder, rape, beatings, and castration. At one point more than 100,000 Kenyans were detained in British-run camps. There has been a long battle for justice against the British government and now they have won this hard fought compensation battle. The sum however is a paltry £20 million. This distributed between the many claimants will be very little for each one. Nevertheless its an important moral victory for a group that were treated with complete distain and inhumanity. It was a black and bloody stain on our colonial history. The foreign secretary will make a statement in the House of Commons later today addressing this contentious issue.
