Why this obsession with the Tudors?
There is hardly a week or day that goes by before another programme or film turns up to tell the tale of the Tudors. Last night on BBC 2 we had Henry VII: Winter King. We are collectively stuck in a time warp. What is about this period of history that causes us to return with such regularity? I would suggest its for one old reason - a good story. Its about family, love hate, murder, religion and above all power. It all starts in a rather dodgy way with the killing of Richard III at Bosworth in 1485, and the start of the new regime under Henry VII. It ends with the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. In between these two dates we have the most almighty rumpus, both nationally and internationally. The most significant being our divorce from Rome in 1533 and the founding of the Church of England with Henry VIII as its head. This had the most profound impact on the national psyche that we are still dealing with today. Moreover it ushered in the English Reformation and the embryonic flames of the enlightenment. In addition out of this political maelstrom and crucible came the greatest of all dramatists Shakespeare. Can you think of a better story?
