What smell turns you on?
I wrote yesterday about Death and Dying-today the opposite-living and sex. We have all been pre-occupied with smells for many thousands of years. Smell for an infant can quickly identify its mother-whether its her body smell or that of her milk. We carry this sense of smell into our adult love lives-the odour of our potential partner is an important aphrodisiac. One cannot imagine being attracted to someone if you didn't find their smell arousing. As the French philosopher Camus said regarding the possibility of sex-its all in the anticipation. And smell is an essential part of that anticipation! So to aid us in this conquest researchers at The Wild Life Conservation Society's at Bronx Zoo in New York have found that one particular scent more than any other did the trick for big cats in the Guatemalan jungle. They discovered that jaguars had been filmed rubbing, sniffing and pawning objects sprayed with a variety of different perfumes. The researchers tried some 23 different products ranging from Revlon's Charlie and Nina Ricci's L'Air du Temps to the Oscar of success-Obsession for Men by Calvin Klein. So spotty adolescent boys should give up their Lynx its the wrong odour-it just does not have the cachet. Nine out of 10 cats prefer Obsession! Its good news that we have trusted our instincts otherwise we may not have survived for all these years. Nevertheless this knowledge may give us the edge over our competitors.

One of the loveliest things about dogs is that they adore the smells that turn other humans off - like your smelly socks! True love!
ReplyDeleteThank you Anna for you comments. I agree about the dogs!
