Jeckll and Hyde at the BBC. Huw Edwards, has pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children at Westminster Magistrates Court. He was for over 20 years the steadfast face of the BBC and was one of its highest paid members of staff. News at Ten - had him presenting it on a regular basis. On election night he was the anchor and MC. On days of national celebration and tragedy - he was there to oversee the process. He has gone in only a matter of months from - zenith to nadir. He will be sentenced on 16 September. What a personal tragedy for him and his family. The crisis he has gone through - would no doubt benefit from psychotherapy.
Another important factor is the reputation of the BBC. The national broadcaster plays a central role in our public life. It's integrity and our ability to trust this organisation is imperative and necessary. The BBC new of these allegations back in November 2023 - their handling of the case raises other management problems. Moreover Newsnight revealed in July 2023 complaints regarding Huw Edwards, inappropriate behaviour towards a junior member of staff. What happened to that investigation? Where the BBC management involved in a cover-up and more concerned with it's own reputation?
Another interesting fact is that Edwards, a few years ago decided to lose weight. He took up boxing and managed to shed 3 stone. This was clearly a - midlife crisis. No one picked up this psychological underlying problem. As a retired adult psychoanalyst, I knew this was a - distress signal. He wanted to be more attractive - we didn't know then it was to a perversion. A duty of care by the BBC should have picked this up. I'm surprised and shocked that they didn't. The culture secretary Lisa Nandy, has demanded to see the director general of the BBC today. We all want and deserve clear and unambiguous answers from the national broadcaster.
