I trained as a social worker at the London School of Economics in the 1970's. Back then - there was a well established system of regular supervision and support from senior staff. As a consequence, dealing with a difficult psychological and problematic case was made easier. Today according to the latest research about the profession, social workers are desperate to leave. The main reason cited was - social isolation - "we don't work in teams any more". Was one reaction. Since Covid, when working from home was necessary - that hasn't been re -established. In addition the offices have been sold off to help Social Services budgets. So there isn't a central hub - where you can network, find help and mutual support. Another social worker said, "when you work from home, you just cannot shut the door and leave, it's always with you". Given the fact of so much family breakdown and complex child custody cases - this is an extremely worrying state of affairs.
