This is the opinion of Dr Richard Smith one time in house GP for TV-AM and editor of the British Medical Journal. This gives us the opportunity to get things in order pre-death. Grieve the things we will now never do and say our goodbyes. Going to see family, friends and places we love for the last time. Listen to music, go to the opera, ballet or play. A sudden death from a heart attack doesn't allow that chance to do all the above things. Dementia strips away slowly at our very being and identity. A good death is what we should want to have, perhaps in a Hospice that is familiar with the process? As Dr Smith says 'all we need in morphine, whisky and luck'. Don't let the oncologists get their bloody hand on you in order to prolong your life. Accept what the cards have handed you.
Happy 2015. So as we enter a new year lets be prepared for what the year offers us.
