The Boy in the Dress by David Walliams.

What a great show this was on BBC One last night. The story of Dennis who lives in and ordinary house in and ordinary town, but he's not ordinary. Dennis (Billy Kennedy) wants to wear a dress - this is a validation of difference. We are all different whether by sex, race religion, sexual orientation, hobbies etc. Kate Moss played a visiting role like the fairy good mother. David Walliams the author played his part as the part time referrer with panache. Dennis was excellent with all the doubts and inhibitions that come from realising  that there is a gap in his life, that the exit of his beloved mother has exposed. Meera Syal is excellent in the role of the besotted friend of Peter, the father of Dennis. The one thing Dennis has that non of the other boys at his school has and that is the ability to score goals. This he does in the final and saves the thrashing by 5/4 and the Cup. The headmaster Mr Hawthorn (Tim McInnery) was a secret cross dresser himself at weekends and the French teacher Miss Windsor was a scatty (Jennifer Saunders). All in all a very good programme that had a prime slot on Boxing Day. The BBC should be congratulated on this scheduling.
