Good night Camp Bastion.
The war in Afghanistan lasted from the Autumn of 2001 to October 2014 the longest period of war the British forces have been engage in for many years. Longer than the combined WW1 and WW2 put together. The total cost was £37 billion. Making Camp Bastion fit for purpose cost to £50 million and the cost of dismantling the base and re-deployment of its facilities £300 million. The number killed was 453 out of a deployment over the whole period of 140,000 troops. So in blood and iron this has been a major investment by the tax payer for keeping us safe in our collective beds and night. Watching the program on Chanel 4 Billion Pound Base: Dismantling Camp Bastion was inspiring seeing the last troops doing their job with commitment and professionalism. For Lt Colonel Quinn this was his last tour of duty after 32 years in the British army. He felt proud of what had been achieved by his men and women over the ensuing 13 years. Will we ever again engage in such and expensive and divisive war in the future? Who can tell what the future offers us as a nation and our men and women in the services?
