The benefits of studying STEM subjects at AS and A level.
The education secretary Nicky Morgan is singing the praises of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Why? They are better in the longer term regarding occupational possibilities. Doing an arts degree gives you less flexibility and choices post university. When choosing AS and A levels students should think more clearly about the long term advantages not the short term ones of education and what peers may be doing. This is true in general and in particular for female students. Generally speaking its boys that take the STEM's route and this leads to their salary differential in later occupations. Choosing a science type degree doesn't mean that you cannot post university go if that is what you want to do in to the world of the arts. The foundation that STEM's give you are an education for life. So teachers, career advisers should think more seriously and longitudinal for their students not immediate gratification. So having got rid of the abrasive Michael Gove lets listen more attentively to Nicky Morgan she is speaking sense. .
