Stained glass.
If you have ever had the fortunate experience of seeing the magnificent widow at York Cathedral with its translucent light radiating onto the cathedral floor then that is something if possible you want to re-live. Just so with the artist in glass Brian Clarke born in Oldham, Lancashire in 1953. His stained glass widows are now seen across the world from London to the Middle East and further afield. His perception of the role of the artist is one of opposition and confrontation with the dealers and commissioners in the art world. The role he sees as being absolute, there is no room for compromise - compromise is a distraction and the enemy of beauty. This enthralling programme on BBC 4 last night Colouring Light: Brian Clarke an Artist Apart was a brilliant exposition of his philosophy and method of working. Do make the effort to see it, its illuminating.
