What is wrong with Rachael Reeves?

At PMQ’s on Wednesday, the first after the Christmas break, I watched the chancellor Rachel Reeves sitting next to the prime minister. She looked - as if she hadn’t had a proper night’s sleep for weeks. Moreover she looked seriously depressed and woebegone and didn’t want to be sitting on the front bench next to Starmer. Is she unwell or is it more political - she wants out? However we have been here before with Rachel Reeves, back on Wednesday 2 July 2025 - she was visibly upset and crying as she sat next to him on the front bench again at PMQ’s.

But by common consent - she isn’t doing a particularly good job at the Treasury. It’s often suggested by the political class that the fortunes of the prime minister and chancellor are inextricably tied together, but that isn’t always the case. I can foresee a time - when Starmer, in order to save his own political skin will - throw her under the proverbial bus. Unless the economy picks up speed in the next few months and by the local elections in May - she will collect her P45. Who would then take over?  My money is on Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary - she has a good pedigree when it comes to economics.
