The new Germany.

As we approach an increasingly uncertain world, one country is facing the future with a new sense of uncertainty. That country is Germany. I have a - soft spot for the country as I lived there in - the height of the Cold War in September 1964 for several months. So I listen with interest to the RUSI podcast on 14 January entitled: How Will German Rearmament Shape European Security? The chancellor Friedrich Merz, has decided a more modern armed forces are -  necessary given the uncertainty of both Russia and America. The increased expenditure is considerable over the next few years. One particular policy causing controversy is that of conscription to the armed forces. In general terms the German people agreed with increasing expenditure, but draw the line when their - kids might have to face Russian troops in Ukraine. This is always the dilemma for politicians, when the - rubber hits the road and reality looks them in the eye. This is the new Germany.
