Lee Miller 1907-1977.

The life of the American photographer Lee Miller, was extraordinary in so many ways. Brought up in a middle class family, she was photographed by her father in - what today would be considered risqué many were her naked in exotic poses. She made her way to Paris in the 1930’s when it was considered the centre of - avant garde art. She went there to be with the Surrealist artist Man Ray. They soon became lovers, but he also taught her a great deal about the art of photography. She therefore moved within this intellectual milieu. She met in Paris Sir Roland Penrose, who was a close friend of Picasso amongst other people. In 1939 with the outbreak of WW2, she became a - war photographer and journalist. A famous picture of her in Hitler’s, bathtub was hypnotic and intimate and was taken by a close friend and colleague  David E. Scherman. If you want to know more about Lee Miller, see the programme on BBC iPlayer or visit Tate Britain, where there is an exhibition of her work as a photographer.
