It’s quite extraordinary to think that the US has its eyes on Greenland - as if it was part of the country. Denmark, has responsibility for the country and is - shocked by this idea. The rules of the game are rapidly changing. If this was to happen it would spell the end of NATO. European countries are struggling to agree a common strategy and policy towards the US. Apparently the president sees a potential threat across the north of the Arctic, to American interests. Both Russia and China, would then have access across the north, due to global warming as the pack ice is melting. Moreover there are rich mineral deposits in the region. The population of Greenland is small at roughly 56,000 people. It’s a vast country and therefore sparsely populated. The capital Nuuk has about 20,000 residents. These are parlous times, so what should European leaders do next?
