After a rather long and drawn out election since Rishi Sunak, announced his intention to step down as leader of the Conservative Party on 5 July - the race is thankfully over. Kemi Badenoch, has the poison chalice as leader. There is 5 years to the next election so plenty of time to see what she is - made of. She has the reputation of - picking a fight in an empty room. Is she able to enthuse a disunited party - after the worst result in the parties history? Its not an enviable role to be in. However she is the fourth female leader of the Conservative Party. First Mrs Thatcher, then Teresa May, next the disastrous Liz Truss and now Kemi Badenoch. Moreover she is the first black woman to lead a major political party in the whole of Europe. She was born in England but spent many years growing up in her parent’s home country of Nigeria. The Labour Party on the other hand haven’t had one female leader. Why not? In the trade union movement at large - there is deep misogyny mistrust and fear of women. This dinosaur attitude is holding- too many capable, intelligent and successful women back. Time to - turn the page.
