There are few trees more evocative about Britain, than the oak tree - in Latin that's Quercus. Many years ago in Regents Park Road, near Primrose Hill there was a delightful antique shop called - Quercus. In the late 1960's I bought a number of items there, with my then partner Davina. Over the years we had a number of very desirable pieces of old oak furniture. Sadly those days are long gone. Nevertheless, I've retained an interest in oak. So last night on BBC Four they had a educational programme called OakTree: Nature Greatest Survivor. They are truly magnificent and we owe them a lot - and they were part of the British fleet that helped Nelson win at Trafalgar. The evolution of the tree is quite amazing and the oldest are about 1000 years old. About 2000 years after the last Ice Age - we start to see the oak in our countryside. I won't say more - but do watch this - year in the life of the oak in rural Oxfordshire on BBC Four.
