Sir Roger Bannister.

It was 70 years ago on the 6 May 1954 that he broke the iconic 4 minute mile. He managed only just to break the record by a whisker at 3/59.4 seconds. Nevertheless he was the first person to do it on the - track at Iffley Road in Oxford. Looking back on that historic occasion it's impossible to recreate just how magical this was. I was always interested in athletics and went each year to the AAA Championships at the White City stadium. I remember seeing Gordon Perie and Emil Satopek, who were at the time outstanding long distance runners. Since that date there have been some 1750 athletes - who have run a sub-four minute mile. Its however the name of Sir Roger Bannister, who will always be remembered. He died in 2018 at the age of 88.
