As someone who in the 1960's trained as a chef at catering college - I know how difficult being a good cook is. Last night on BBC One the food critics were in the hot seat in Master Chef: Battle of the Critics. It was splendid stuff, with one good meal after another. However it wasn't difficult to guess the winner - as his dishes were so much more sophisticated and mouth watering than the other chefs. Nevertheless the other contestants put up a good fight and also made excellent gastronomic delights. There were five contestants, but only one superb performance and winner in Jay Rayner. If I was able to provide that level of expertise, when I was a chef, I would be very content.
