The German birth rate is insufficient.
The latest data regarding the German population suggest that the German population is drastically falling. The main cause is that women are having babies much later and restricting their families to either one or two children. The big family is decreasing like the Dodo and will soon be - extinct. This has potentially grave implications for social and economic policy. Moreover the less educated are on average having more children. The consequence being that the education gap between highly educated German women and their children, compared to their less educated contemporaries is increasing. In Britain we have a different issue, namely we have an increasing population, but this is mainly coming from the immigrant population. They are having larger families that the indigenous population. This is having major implications regarding all school places and especially for pre-school and primary schools. In addition the religious balance of the country is changing with the Church of England is decline, compared with the Catholic and Muslim faiths. So we are witnessing a dramatic, albeit slow change in both the ethnic and religious face of Britain. How will it be in 50 years from now?
