There is a new frontier opening up and that is in the 'teeth department'. Its no good any longer going to the right school or having a good degree, its in the teeth that social mobility will be won or lost. Malcolm Gladwell the writer and social scientist has said that " teeth and obesity are the same, they are the symptoms, the same set of inference that are drawn about your social status". This is the latest arena of social discrimination. The biggest gap is in the adolescent market place, where middle class kids have the ubiquitous 'brace' so loved by orthodontists, poor kids have to go without and suffer irregular teeth for the rest of their deprived lives. Apparently people with whiter teeth are considered better off that they really are by some £10,000 a year. Moreover good teeth are associated with good health, and that is the new social touchstone in our evolutionary race.
