Tonight on the Any Questions? programme Radio 4 - there were four panelists - none of them supported Maria Miller in her so called 32 minute - 'apology' - in the House of Commons. When Johnathan Dimbelby asked the audience for their opinion 95% thought that she should - consider her position as Secretary of State for Media etc. Later in the evening Newsnight had the hapless Therese Coffey MP put up to defend the indefensible - Maria Miller MP (LSE) the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. They clearly don't understand what we know from system theory, namely "you cannot not communicate". Whether you like it or not, your always communicating. All dictators comprehend this from Caesar, Stalin, Hitler et al. Why are out politicians so obtuse? David Cameron said some years ago - when the corruption of our political system was exposed by The Daily Telegraph - "that he wanted the fresh air to disinfect" etc. What happened? The answer is power. The intoxication of it drives them, as David Owen one time Foreign Secretary observed to 'hubris'. It seems to me The Maria Miller has to go. The problem for the PM is that it makes him look weak and vacillating - propped up by poor gullible Mr Clegg. Ed Milliband is no different - has he ever done a proper job in his life? No of course not! Feather-bedded by his illustrious father - one of my many teacher at the London School of Economics. So I feel a certain connection to the unhappy and naive lad. Alistair Campbell the spin doctor under Mr Blair - said that if a story lasts for - I think it was ten days - then its 'good night'. I think this story has as they say "legs"! She will be gone in my opinion by the end of the weekend - just wait and see.
What better rationale for not letting politicians getting their dirty fingers - on press regulation? I rest my case!
