Published in Nature this week is the research by the biological scientists of what they have discovered at the world renown Welcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge. They have noted the miracle the very instance conception takes place. Its happens at the molecular level when the protein named Juno (the goddess of love) receives the sperm from the male called Izumo. The protein Juno then closes the door, a draw bridge is brought up, thereby not allowing any other sperm to enter the egg of the potential mother. This ensures there is only one sperm that carries the DNA from the father. Otherwise there would be too much DNA information transferred to the egg causing abnormalities. For the psychoanalyst this is great news. Freud had a female patient who reported to him during her analysis that she had had a dream of a penis entering her and shooting sperm. He didn't have the benefit of this new scientific knowledge. We all want to know the circumstances of our conception, were our parents in love, were we wanted, was it under duress? This gives us information about us and who we are. The miracle of conception is one of the wonders that we are share.
