Calvary.
This film should be required viewing for all priests and ex-priests of the Catholic faith. Their pusillanimity held up for public scorn. Brendan Gleeson the priest is ridiculed by the locals in the Republic of Ireland. If anyone doubted the personal trauma that child sex abuse inflicts on its victims this film will disabuse them. Its an excoriating movie. As a psychoanalyst I had a number of patients who had been victims and it took years for them to recover and some never did. Corrupted by a system they once trusted has now crucified them. As with all organisations they are the same - their so called public reputation is far more important than the plight of their victims. Holding onto to their power is all they are interested in. That includes politicians, the police, the services add to the list as you think fit. The victim is held for nothing. Gleeson racked by his own furies plays the role with consummate skill. Francine Stock on Radio 4 The Film Programme said is was her film of the week. I agree. As we approach Easter and Calvary this is a apposite time to visit a picture house if not the house of god.
