A road movie about Shakespeare - what could be more enjoyable?
Understanding Shakespeare for all of us - no matter our nationality is daunting. So anything that helps over those first fitful steps must be applauded. Just so with this imaginative film Muse of Fire: A Shakespearean Road Movie. Two actors and friends Giles Terera and Dan Poole took to the road to aid us in this quest. They assemble a whole cast of the great and good in the thearte, ranging from - Dame Judie Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Geraldine James and many more besides. The problem for many is getting to grips with the language - iambic pentameter (don't be put off) the heart beat of verse. The renowned teacher of verse speaking is the legendary - Cecily Berry who says to always bear in mind there is 'no full stop in Shakespeare' until the end of the play. Even our most illustrious and talented actors are initial fearful of approaching this god of drama. He stands alone in the pantheon of writers across in all generations and countries. I have a friend who in the 1960's at Cambridge hopped to be the equal of the Bard if not surpass him, ambition is always important. My first introduction to Shakespeare was in Stratford in 1964 for the War of the Roses season directed by Sir Peter Hall who later became the next director of the National Theatre after Sir Lawrence Olivier. The current chap Sir Nicholas Hytner will give up the job in April 2015 to Rufus Norris.

Agreed! Any work that can be done to make Shakespeare more accesible is great news. They're doing some really interesting work with the Shakespeare Schools Festival (http://www.ssf.uk.com/) and St Mary's School Cambridge were one of the first to pilot a new Shakespeare app (http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Education/Universities/Is-this-an-app-I-see-before-me-02112012.htm).
ReplyDeleteAll really exciting stuff.
