Not fit enough to do her job.
Some years ago researchers looked into the general fitness of prison officers to do their job. The request came after a serious riot in a major prison in the US. They discovered to their dismay that so many of them were unfit, they could't run to the scene of the crime quick enough, thus allowing a minor disturbance to develop into a riot. They had been putting on the pounds of flab for so long no one had noticed the expanding waist line. Over recent years I have noticed that the police in London and now so covered in military equipment, I doubt if they could run very far without requiring a tea break. So I was struck by the item in The Times about an unfit Chief Constable who failed her own fitness test. The guilty copper is none other than Jacqui Cheer of Cleveland Police. The new test will be an official requirement from next September, so she has a year to get on her bike and get the heart pumping. A police spokesperson said that - 'it was not necessary for her to be fit, as she has a desk job' - so that's ok then! She joined the Essex force in 1984 and spent many years in uniform. I wonder if she was fit enough to do her job even then?
