Are we all over reacting?
There is understandably concern about the events at Woolwich, but there is a real danger of over reaction to this tragic event. Clearly there are some in the country who are Muslim and disillusioned with the foreign policy of the government and have decided to take the law in to their own hands. There may be a few pockets of people that are planning to do terrible things, but only a few. Nevertheless this is not like WW1 and WW2 - an existential threat to the state. Setting aside the issue of the foreign policy - there is a real problem of social mobility for many of these kids. This is also true for the population at large. The Cameroon's don't appreciate this fact. Unless kids can see a way forward for themselves, alienation will set in. This is not the whole story, but an important contributing factor. More needs to be done to help those who feel socially disengage from larger society, and help them become more part of the main stream. In addition to their marginality is the extreme fear of modernity.
